Sleep better, work better: How to improve your sleep hygiene
Sleeping well can be the key to performing at your best when you arrive at work. But did you know that you can actually improve your sleep hygiene and wake up feeling fresher and more ready to tackle the day? We look at some top tips for excellent sleep hygiene.
Get some exercise
It can be easy to forget that you need to move your body to feel truly tired. It is mentally exhausting to sit behind a computer and work all day, but physically, you may still be feeling tense and restless. Even going for a gentle jog or walk in the evening can help you to work through the stresses and strains of the day and feel more ready to relax.
Cut the caffeine
Many of us consume caffeine during the day – either in a cup of tea or coffee or by eating chocolate in the evening. Try to curb your caffeine consumption by 2 pm so that it has time to work through your system before you curl up in bed.
Prepare your sleeping space
A messy and overheated bedroom won’t help you to sleep well and could lead to you feeling ill-rested the next day. Keep your room cool and clutter-free, without screens in the bedroom, so that you can identify it as a place of rest, not work. Introducing blackout curtains and eliminating noise can also help.
Keep up your routine
Once you set a sleep routine, stick to it – this will help you to form a healthy habit. For you, this might mean doing sleep yoga, having a bath, or reading before bed. Choose a sleeping and waking time and stick to it so that you achieve your optimum amount of rest.
Avoid reaching for sleeping aids
If you are struggling to sleep, resist the urge to reach for sleeping pills or alcohol to help you sleep. This won’t provide you with deep and restful sleep, nor will it help you to build up a healthy routine that you can stick to. Make sure that you are enjoying a nourishing and natural rest instead.
Adhering to a strong sleep routine can help you to sleep well and wake up ready to tackle whatever the day throws at you. And when you utilise these great tips, you should be well on your way to enjoying better rest.
