Run, play, laugh, dance!

It’s that time of year again, when we send out a gentle reminder to take some time off during the summer and let your brain, nervous system and body rejuvenate itself. Even if you don’t have bucketloads of vacation time, see if you can still find some time to give your brain a break.

There are so many ways to do this, here are a few ideas to inspire you:

  • Go out and play kids’ games (with or without children!)
  • Finger paint or draw or get a colouring book and fill it in spontaneously
  • Turn on some music and dance
  • Go swimming – in the sea or a lake if possible
  • Take naps
  • Lock your devices away for a day, or a week, or at least a few hours every day
  • Go for long slow walks in nature
  • Wear some clothes very different than your usual
  • Experiment with some new foods
  • Do something that makes you laugh out loud
  • Reach out to an old friend you haven’t connected with lately

Why are these useful and important?

  • Fun activities and novelty help balance your brain chemicals and reduce stress.
  • Using your brain differently helps it make new connections and think new thoughts.
  • Resting and letting your mind wander is great for creativity and new ideas.
  • Resting your body is essential for staying healthy and building your immune system.
