Being around complainers can be tiring and dispiriting. But sometimes there are important messages that complainers are trying to convey, even if they do it unskillfully.
If you can help unpick what they are trying to contribute and help communicate better, you could save a lot of frustration and improve your team at the same time.
We usually celebrate success when we reach a final outcome, like earning a certain degree, getting the dream job or promotion, stating the business, selling the business, or finishing the marathon.
But so much goes into those goals and we often overlook the small things we do every day because we’re not “there” yet. But we are earning the way. And all of those steps deserve recognition.
Most of us suffer from some form of an inner critic. What we may not realise is that these internal voices also impact those we work with.
Inner critics can inhibit our creativity and our ability to speak up and be honest with others.
People pleasing is a common trait that many of us use as we to try and fit in to a team or group. It’s a natural human tendency, most likely driven by our powerful need to belong.
But our people-pleasing behaviours usually don’t contribute to healthy relationships in the workplace and there are many costs to the pleaser as well as to those they try to please.
It’s often said that no one can make you feel a certain way. That’s true but it’s not the whole story.
